Typically, the external mounting points are under the normally empty root directory “/volumes” although the mounting point can be anywhere. On the other hand, Unix employs a single file tree structure starting with “/“ or root with directories being added as logical extensions with their own specific access permissions whether the directory is within the root file structure or a “mounted” external disk with its own file system. (IBM did a similar thing for CMS under 370/VM). In Windows, partitions or external disks are added as separate file space with a designated letter for the name. Windows uses the mini-disk concept from CP/M with a discontiguous file structure. Unix has a continuous tree directory structure.
